I came across this informative site about the different types of antibiotics.  Personally I think that vets throw antibiotics at dogs too liberally and without determining what the underlying nature and cause of the infection are, but they are necessary in some situations.  Note that not all antibiotics are good for each situation - e.g. when your dog has a urinary tract infection, you must discover whether the bacteria are staph, proteus, e. coli or strep to determine which antibiotic will be effective.  That means having a culture and sensitivity analysis done in the lab.
