My poor boy isn't feeling very well. He started with a little cough and within 4 hours he was honking non-stop like a Canada Goose and retching up mucous all over the house.
I had him at the vets within 5 hours of onset of the cough but his throat was still very swollen and he was short of breath at times! I was shocked at how quickly this came on. Scared me to death.
He's had a steroid injection to deal with the swelling around his trachea, started on antibiotics as the vet suspects that it is at least partially bacterial based on the rapid onset to serious symptoms and is taking a narcotic pain reliever to help reduce his cough.
He is not coughing nearly as much thankfully, but is a bit stoned from the narcotic cough suppressant. Thankfully we've been in Kingston this week so our big guy Rex hasn't been exposed to him for over a week.....he has no symptoms so I think he is in the clear.
Please send some positive thoughts for my poor sick boy!

I've heard about kennel cough for years, but never had a dog become infected. I had no idea how serious it could be. How is Sam? Is his cough gone? How long does it generally last?

It really varies. And kennel cough or bordetella is a catch all name for respiratory infection. Some dogs cough, some just get snotty noses, some get very sick. It can be viral or bacterial. I've only ever had one dog get very sick with it. Most of the time, I see minor cases that are self limiting so I rarely treat it. If I suspect another opportunistic infection is showing up or there may be some aspirate pneumonia happening, then we zip to the vet. Sam is actually not terribly ill nor is he coughing all that much. It's mostly when he goes from the warm house to the cold yard. So we haven't treated it other than to boost his immune system as much as possible and limit his exercise to some degree. Wish I could get the old bugger to take honey, but he won't.

Wally had it really bad, coughed all night, gagged and would gobble like a turkey. Ringo & Hank are the only 2 that didn't get it. Swept through the house, like clockwork 4 days after one had it another would catch it. We're well past the 4 day mark and still have fingers crossed it's over. Wally loved his honey. I thought I'd put down 2 bowls of warm water with honey so everyone would get some. Wally decided that BOTH bowls of water were his, drank both bone dry and peed a small lake after in the front porch.
