I have this question in to my vet, but I thought I would ask the pug population, as well.
I am looking to build an emergency kit for wee Lola (okay, fill the existing one out more), and I realised I don't have anything for anaphylactic reactions.
Is it regular Benadryl liquid...or the tablets...or the children's liquid (that has SO MUCH BAD stuff in it) that one is supposed to stock up on?

I use the tablets and the topical in my first aid kit. All children's meds are off my list since I can't always guarantee they don't contain Xylitol and that is very toxic to dogs. Unfortunately, it isn't always listed in the ingredients and I'm just too afraid to risk it.

Yep, Blanche is right. Stay clear of children's medications and stick with regular Benadryl tablets!

Thank you! Do you crush the tablets up, or simply smear them in complete deliciousness to encourage the eating thereof?
I'll call my vet for the doseage. Wee Lo is only 14 pounds, so I suspect it would only be a portion of a tablet.
Here's hoping I never need to use them!

As most pugs are more than a little food motivated, I would just put it in some kind of little treat for them. I never have any problems giving Reilly meds if I roll them inside a little bread ball with peanut butter. He loves the taste and its too sticky for him to get the meds out!  |

I always have benadryl on hand and we have used Buckelys as well when we had a dog in with a "cold"..he could not breathe and it was the middle of the night..a few drops and he was way better...I would not suggest it but it works in a pinch...

My pug takes benedryl three times a day during the summer . we are able to wein her down to once a day in the winter. she used to have backward sneezes one after another it was horrible. now she barely ever gets one.
you can get Rexal(pharma plus) or equate (walmart) antihistamine with the same medication in it as benadryl for alot cheaper and more pills for your money.
Darn those allergies

Yep--the name of the med in Benadryl is Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride. Shopper's sells a Life brand of it. |

Yup - diphenhydramine is OK for most dogs. Your family vet can give you the appropriate dose for your pugs. There is a general dose but they'll also take into account your pug's medical history, past reactions to drugs/etc. and stuff so it's best to make sure that benadryl is OK for your pug and what the best dose for your particular pug is. Like people and their anti-histamines, benadryl may not necessarily work for all dogs. There are a variety of other anti-histamines that we recommend that are available in the human market but your family vets would know best which other ones to give.

We were put on Benedryl a few years back for his Summer allergies, dosage adjusted by the vet, but it made him really drowsy, so it was discontinued.

Found it worked, just made him too drowsy. Allergy season may come early this year, depending on the weather...
