Meet Harley--we'll be changing his name as we've had a zillion Harleys. He was either sold or given away in a newspaper 5 or 6 days ago. So the demodex is not a new condition. Obviously the seller/giver away was re-homing a dog in bad condition. Unfortunately, within days of being re-homed, he was hit by a car and ended up at the London VEC. The new owner was unable to afford his necessary vet care--so the VEC called us.
The good news is that the injury is relatively minor--for being hit by a car--as it's only a fractured leg. The VEC will fix his leg and possibly neuter him--depending on what the surgeon feels--and then he will be coming into foster care and we'll tackle the demodex. His poor skin is a mess.
He'll be officially posted when he gets into his foster home, etc, but I wanted people to see him and I wanted to highlight this poor little man. We think he's probably no older than 7 months and already had a rough go of it.

That just breaks my heart! Poor little guy. And reaffirms my belief that the general public SUCKS. Present company excluded, of course.
I think you should name him Ronan. It means "little seal" in gaelic and he reminds me of a little seal pup in that pic.
Or maybe Nemo, after the movie, since Nemo had a hurt fin, this boy has a hurt leg, and they both need to find a way home.

I like both of those names. We'll see what his foster mom comes up with. And I emphasized "this is a rescue" because in the truest sense of the word, the dogs in the shelter system or grievously hurt and will be euthanized due to an owner's inability to afford the vet costs or the ones just abandoned at the side of the road or a vet clinic are REALLY the rescues. Yes, owner surrenders are rescues as well--and technically this guy is an owner surrender--but these little guys are the heart of rescue--the ones who face death without us. Not that I think someone at the London VEC wouldn't have moved heaven and earth to find a safe haven for him. But these dogs are the ones who grab your heart and make me thankful that we have such a supportive pug community. Because of the foster folks and the incredible fund raising of so many people--not the least of whom are Jean and Maureen and their incredible raffle baskets--we have the several thousand dollars it will take to bring this one back to health.

OH my good lord!!! Looks like Pugalug will have their hands full, but he is in the right care. A lot of smart pug lovers out there with a lot of experience with this. God love this poor little guy. We hope he gets well soon, and hope to see him at the next Pugalug. Sometimes I think Sami had it rough, this poor guy needs some TLC and a good pug rescue to get him back to good heath. Blanche, you have done wonderful things for Pippin, bet with your help, he will look and feel great in no time.

He's not coming to me. I really AM taking a break. I mean it. Really. He's going to a lady who fostered for us a while back and took a break after her second child--but she's ready to foster again and is closer to London so she'll be taking on this little man.

Thank God he landed at Pugalug.... Sounds like the odds were against him until that happened.... I can hardly wait to see his progress.

I looked at the pic before i read the post and thought to myself, "He looks like Jemmie!" Fawn vs. black but the same general condition of fur- or lack thereof. Its AMAZING what can happen with some medical attention and the help of Pugalug- my Jemmie is a testament to that! Good luck little man! I know you can do really, really well!
And to anyone following this little guy who thinks he might have a home with you but you're worried the mange makes him "high risk"- DON'T WORRY! Once its cleared up, you get a great little pug with no further skin issues. Jemmie's mange was bad enough that he suffered some permanent hair loss and has to wear a sweater and/or coat in winter to protect his "suede skin" but he's perfectly healthy and happy! Don't let the mange scare you away!

Jemmers was actually worse, I think, than this guy--who is bad enough. But yeah, mange isn't a health crisis at all if treated promptly. And Jemmie has the double whammy of the worst case of demodex I've ever seen and being black who tend to be a bit folliclely challenged anyway....

I just know that people see mange and freak, thinking "this is a dog who's gonna have chronic problems". I wanted to let EVERYONE know that it isn't the case. We feed Jem a good grain-free food, he gets his fish oil pills and that's about it. A really bad case of demodex is a pet-owner/vet issue- not the dog's- there is nothing inherently wrong with the dog. The mange was allowed to spin out of control and the dog suffers- but once treated (yeah ivermectin!), you have a great dog with no further skin issues. Don't rule the little guy out!

I second that Shannon.....Pugsley had demodex and our vet was too scared to use ivermectin so we went through months and months of issues. See photo of Pugsley as a puppy....thank goodness for Blanche who helped get Pugsley on her way. Since she was a year old (and treated), we have never had another skin problem. I spent thousands on vet bills/meds in her first year and although our vet tried..... she didn't have the knowledge or experience with treating demodex. (Including getting her on a proper diet). I would wonder if poor little "Ronan" had any vet care or if he did, whether the vet just didn't know the proper treatment..... Pugsley and our family will never forget the help from Pugalug which saved her life!!
