We had the pleasure a couple of weeks ago of entertaining a friend and psychology colleague who is a real dog-lover. She brought her young poodle Cally (Calliope) and the dogs had a blast together.
Previously, Louise had a poodle called Cadeau ("gift" in French) who was her soulmate. It came time when Caddy was quite ill and Louise could not bear the thought of "putting him down". But she also didn't want to be selfish and have her dog suffer after it was time to go. When she asked the vet to let her know if it was time to release her beloved pet, the words that came spontaneously to her were, "If I lose sight of where my selfishness ends and my selfless love takes over, would you please cue me when it comes time to
send him up?" Happily it wasn't that day.
However, the time did come before too long and Caddy sent himself up. In the meantime Louise had time to reframe her thinking from the negative "putting him down" to the more positive "sending him up". Her thinking was literally turned upside down.
