Rocky has been eating raw for a few months. Initially he loved it. But he is consistently refusing to eat it now (eats a bit and leaves the rest). I've tried different food types and brands. He will eat his treats, bones and of course the favorite....cheese. He isnt' displaying any symptoms of illness either thankfully. I'm considering switching him back to kibble. My question is, how do I transition him back to kibble without upsetting his stomach? Or....does anyone have any other suggestions?

Actually Angela, I think that you can just switch back. That's what we did a couple of months ago. Darwin and Ada loved the raw diet but Darwin lost 3lbs in one month on it (at a .6 of a pound to eat each day!) so it was just too costly for us to continue right now with both Nick and I out of work. We are hoping to try again when we have more cash flow.
We just switch them back to flooded kibble one day, no troubles. We switched them onto Orijen regional red in the beginning, and now we're trying out Acana Grasslands.

This sounds like what I've been going through with, Mackie my boston terrier, his entire life (six years). He's always been a finicky eater and frequently skips meals...he basically would only eat enough dog food to maintain his weight. Treats and human food he'd take all you'd give him but not his meals. I switching him from kibble to home cooked food which worked for a while. This spring it got really bad, I was struggling to get one meal a day into him and he was becoming less and less active in order to maintain his weight. It was driving me crazy! When I tried pre-made raw and he wouldn't even touch it I got really started to give up hope. I had wellness blood work done on him and a long talk with the vet and our conclusion is that there's nothing physically wrong with him. Last week I read a post on another dog forum about the benefits of apple cider vinegar (acv) for dogs. http://80.101.173.50/~roos/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1959&highlight=cider ACV is recommended for finicky eaters among other things so I decided to give it a try. I've been adding a 1/2 teaspoon per meal to Mackie's food since Monday afternoon and he hasn't skipped a meal since. There's only been one meal where he didn't finish his portion but he did eat more than half. I know it's only been a few days, but it's been a great few days!!! Mackie's energetic and playful again and it's so wonderful to see. I didn't realize how lethargic he had gotten. I thought he was finally starting to show his age but that wasn't it, he just didn't have any energy. I'm knocking on wood now hoping and wishing the ACV continues to work!

I really don't know, I'm going to try to research it this weekend. Based on observation alone, I think the smell is enticing him. The smell is strong and reminds me of dirty feet.

I've never had a dog refuse the raw food I give, but I prepare it myself. There is apple cider vinegar in the Breakfast Slop and the evening meal is just meat or poultry or fish. Both meals with water.

I'm really relieved to hear that you use apple cider vinegar Hilary. I switched everybody to Urban Wolf to get them off kibble and increase their water intake.

I'm going to try the ACV. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm very frustrated with his lack of interest in food. He's already slim and I dont want him to lose any weight! I'll pick some up tomorrow!

We'll keep our fingers & paws crossed that it works for Rocky like it has for Mackie.

Well the raw is an absolute no go for Rocky right now...won't touch it no matter what I put on it. He's eating Natural Balance LID and canned right now and loving it.....and thriving..... As long as he's healthy I guess that's all that matters....but I am disappointed.....

I know how you feel Angela. Maybe one day it will work out right for Rocky, Darwin, and Ada.
