I have not posted much but have lurked on and off. Nala, the sweet old lady I adopted from Oklahoma, went to the Bridge last Thursday, a few months shy of her 15th birthday.
After nearly a year of dealing with GI upsets, a liver panel showed her numbers were sky high. We started Marin and she recovered. She did well with ups and downs, and then in the last two weeks just stopped eating, including her meds. She went to the vet a couple of weeks ago, and once again her enzymes were high. She got some arthritis meds, and ate heartily Wednesday and Thursday ate less. She nibbled, then on Friday stopped completely. I boarded her Monday nite at the vets as I had a business trip, and picked her up Tuesday. She was still refusing to eat though she drank. She acted as though she did not recognize me. They suggested specialists to ultrasound her liver and I wondered what that could do when she refused to eat. That night I took her out to pee. She squatted and then fell in it.
I decided to let her go. She did not need to suffer pain (and she was so restless like she could not get comfortable) and the indignity of falling down. My NaNa was a proud little puglet.
We made the appointment, I took a day off from work, we spent a great day together though she was incognizant. Then we went to the vet. I held her the entire time. They had barely started the shot when her head relaxed against my shoulder, as though she was saying "thank you, already." I think that was the right decision; she was tired and worn out and ready to be healthy again.
I am just honored to have been able to have given her the last 17 months and hope she was a happy girl. I will miss her kissy monster, her demanding little bark and paw stamps, and miss her every night beside me. She was my heart pug and I miss her terribly.

A very difficult decision to make but it was the right one. They certainly are proud wee ones and it is important to let them leave us that way. To your heart pug, Nala; may she run free in good health and good company.

Thank you all. It was extra hard as I lost my kitty in November, then I lost my foster pug the day before (she had terminal CRF.) We are coping though Will is weirded out...clingy and needing reassurance (though he is still marking, grrr.)
Nala is in a better place...but that doesn't make it easier to deal with. :-(
