*dusts herself and Amir off*

Where have we been!?

Anyway, as one could guess by the topic, I've finally caved and have been trying Amir on a partial raw diet.  After my local Global stopped carrying Natural Balance (which, go figure, they've since started carrying again), Mr. Man had been eating Canidae's grain free salmon kibble.  I had been giving him a variety of canned as well as he trained me to feed him that too.  As he's become increasingly fussy when it comes to both the canned and kibble, I thought I'd try something completely new for both.

Global had just recently brought in Nature's Variety Instinct frozen raw so I picked up a few trial packs along with the small breed Now! kibble.  In the 11 years Amir has graced my life, I've never seen him whine at each meal (unless it's my own that involves cheese or sweet potatoes).  We started off with the beef but have switched to bison. I have to say, I'm absolutely thrilled with both of these products.  Amir's itching has gone down greatly and his coat seems much better.  He's off to the vet college this week for his needles and a check up.  Our only issue now is to get the ratio down as he's gained a little from actually eating instead of my throwing leftovers out, heh.

You do dare, lol!  I certainly would have tried it sooner if Global carried it as I wasn't really prepared to make it myself, heh.

I was afraid you and Amir had fallen in a well, never to be seen again.  Welcome back.

Raw feeder here from WAY back.  My guys don't do well on the NV due to the eggs and too many other ingredients, but there are LOTS of choices out there these days in the pre-prepared world.

Thank you, thank you! =)

Sadly, the only raw option we have here (save for making my own) is what Global carries.  They didn't bring Nature's Variety in until the the end of last year.  I'm not quite ready yet to make my own, heh.  Luckily, though, he seems to be doing well on it.  I know there's a lot of ingredients to the Now! small breed kibble as well but so far so good.

Heh, thanks for the comments on the grumpy ol' man pic!  He usually looks much, much happier; he just hates having his picture taken.

I know what you mean! My two were kibble grazers. Now they have me up at 5am and are down the stairs and into the kitchen, whining with every step. It is hilarious (except on those days I really want to sleep - that is not so hilarious).

Heh, Amir's starting to do that now as well.  It's not so great when I open the fridge only to remember I forgot to take some out of the freezer (like right now).  Ooops!  Good thing we have canned as back up, heh

I've done that a few times. Not sure how many trips I've made to the grocery store on the way home from work because I knew nothing was thawed at home. Oopsy!

And more on the raw topic!

Yesterday I stopped by a new pet food place here in Charlottetown.  I read something saying that they carried raw so I wanted to check it out as my local Global only carries Nature's Variety.  Don't get me wrong, Amir has been doing great with this brand.  As Blanche mentioned though, there is a lot of ingredients in their food so I've been keeping an eye out for alternatives.

So I stop in and it turns out they carry Carnivora.  The store owner said he didn't really like carrying raw as vets don't approve.  He also had a horrified expression when I said Amir eats part raw and part kibble.  Amir's vet, while not approving of him eating Nature's Variety, didn't say he can't.  While she's not convinced on the whole raw diet thing, I think she sees the fact that he's been doing better and less itchy so she's fine with it.  Nor has she scolded me for mixing raw and kibble.  Suffice to say, because of this, I'm not sure if I should try the Carnivora.

I LOVE CARNIVORA!!  I feed both Theo and Tank Carnivora with a few meals of Tollden Farms--but 75 yo 80% of their meals are carnivora.  With both of them having systemic yeast issues, not having food with fruits or vegs makes a huge difference to them both.

Here's the website, Jemma if you want to read up on whole carcass raw.
