Well, I'm back from the vet.  Darwin gave a urine sample while we were there and they did an immediate urinalysis.  He has lots of red blood cells (big surprise) as well as lots of crystals - struvite AND calcium oxalate.  He is being sedated this afternoon so they can pass a catheter, drain his bladder and then fill it with air so that they can get a really good X-ray to check for stones.  At least he is comfortable.  Sad. I'll let you all know what the results are.  Thanks for the good thoughts.

Well like you said - at least he is comfy - poor Darwin - poor you! Real poor YOU with all these unexpected vet costs! jeez - you guys really need a break! I hope he doesn't need surgery - would be great if it could just clear up with some antibiotics.

Hey Anna,

Sorry to hear that.  Sometimes, with struvite and oxalate together, it can be that the oxalate formed because the sample was contaminated or in the fridge or sat out too long.  It's pretty rare that dogs get both at the same time.  In any case, hopefully there aren't stones in the bladder or anywhere!

Unfortunately I don't think a contaminated sample is the problem since I collected it myself in a sterile dish they gave and it was walked inside, directly back to the lab for an immediate analysis.  Thankfully our vet is going to work with us on a payment plan like Medicard.

Well the X-rays showed no stones, which is good!.  BUT it leaves us with no answers as to why he's peeing blood, which is bad.  Dr. Fox has a call into a nutritionist to have a diet made up for Darwin that takes his calcium crystals into account.  I was confused earlier, there were no struvite.  The next step would be an ultrasound of his bladder but since anything that showed up on ultrasound would likely be sludge or really tiny stones that are non-surgical in nature anyway he would rather not have us go through that expense just yet.  So we pick Darwin up in about an hour and just do a wait and see to see if the new diet helps.  It seems rather inadequate. Anna:
I'm sending you an article from the Whole Dog Journal about Calcium Oxalate stones/crystals.  Might be some help.  I'll email it to you.

It just seems to be the winter for it.  Almost every dog we have in foster care right now has crystals.
