oh dear - pugs and eyes.  I am learning more and more from the experiences of my own dog, Pugsley, and in school that pugs and eyes are not a good combination!  I think pugs are pretty popular in the ophthmalogy department...and soft tissue surgery....I need to marry a soft tissue surgeon or an ophthmalogist so that they can treat the needs of my pugs....Smiley

I really hope Pugsley gets better!  Sending good pug vibes from me and the gang.

Well, we just got back from Forest Hill and it was "Shih Tzu" day there!  Saw about 5 shih tzu's and surprisingly NO Pugs!!  Shocked

Good news: Ulcer has healed!!

Bad news: she had 3 dystichia burned off, one ectopic hair burned off and a stye lanced which developed yesterday

Back again in 2 weeks.  Interestingly, Dr. Goldstein says the dystichia can grow in spurts....she hadn't had any for almost 9 months and here we go again with 5 in the last 2 weeks.  She also has a "dystrophy" region on her grafted eye and he mentioned going on a "low fat" diet can help this.  Not sure how I can manage all these dietary issues as she is doing well on Acana kibble.  Huh?

I'm glad the ulcer is healed.  Darn eye lashes.

And Wellness Core has a reduced fat formula that is worth checking out.

Yeah Pugsley!  I'm so glad that she healed well.  As for a low fat food, check out Natural Balance Bison and Sweet Potato.  I don't know if it's technically low fat but it's pretty lean and both Darwin and Ada lost weight on it without even trying to.

Glad to hear that Pugsley's ulcer has healed.  Sorry to hear about the other procedures.  I remember having a stye when I was young...it hurt, and when it finally burst..yuck!!

Fingers crossed that it's a Good News only day in two weeks.  The last time I had Patty in, it was persian cat day.  The waiting room was full of 'I hate you and I'm going to pee on you bed when I get home'.

LOL: about the Persian cats - I am sure they exacted their revenge as you say.

Good that the ulcer is healed, bad about the diet and the other eye issues. Is Pugsley overweight or is a low fat diet what will help the problem? Maude has an appointment next week, fingers crossed that it is uneventful. Last time we were there the waiting room had quite a few different breeds there - it was refreshing from the mostly Pug times.

The low fat diet is supposed to help the eye problem..... "epithelial/stromal dystrophy"

The problem is described when "there are whitish crystalline lipid deposits, typically cholesterol, in the superficial layers of the cornea. This is thought to result from a disorder of normal lipid metabolism in the cornea. These deposits usually do not cause problems. You may notice a white to grey opacity in 1 or both of your dog's eyes."

I suppose lowering the cholesterol with a low fat diet helps to minimize the lipid deposits.  It started to develop 1 week after her graft surgery last year and they said it was a reaction to the surgery. I think it is much smaller now so I don't think the diet is critical.

All I have are articles on eye problems, but here's my routine.  I never assume a pug's eyes are okay.  EVERY pug in my house (if they have eyes) gets eye lube unless their tear production tests out at higher than 20 (most don't).  I lube all my fosters as well.  And the shih tzu is no better--they are as notorious for eye problems as the pugs and are really bad for prolapses.

I would advise any pug owner to get the Schirmer tear test done.  And probably should get it done a couple of times as the dog ages--decreased tear production is common in older pugs.

Watch for whether or not your pug completely closes their eyes when they sleep--many don't.

Check eyes regularly so that you know when there is a change.

Get your pug used to things being around their eyes so they don't freak out (or freak out quite so much) the first time something happens and then they HAVE to have stuff in and around their eyes.

Memorize the way to the nearest veterinary ophthalmologist.....

OOPs... not sure what I did wrong but quoted your post Blanche and then away it went. Anyhoooo to follow up ... I'm just seeing your response to my query. Must have missed it when I was quarantined in the smallest room in the house after Christmas. Good tips, thank you. What sort of lubricant should I be using in the Pugs eyes everyday?

Blanche just following up on a question that I had with regard to your routine to keep Pug eyes healthy. You mentioned in your post on Dec. 29 in this thread that you put lubricant in each of the Pugs' eyes daily (for those who have eyes  Wink ) so what lubricant would you recommend? And do you buy it at a regular pharmacy? I am finding with the house being so dry this winter with central heat (just set up the humidifier today) that I am concerned that the Pugs eyes may be feeling dry and irritated. Thanks for the advice and previous tips on this important subject of Pug eyes.

We use TearGel in the morning and Lacrilube (thicker) at night.....you can use any human "artificial tear" - Systane Ultra is aonther good one.

You can buy these at any pharmacy.....Blanche may have other suggestions  Grin

Yep--pretty much what I use.  I only use the Lacrilube on dogs that I know have eye issues, but the TearGel I use on everyone who has eyes.  Also like GenTeal, Systane.  Anything that is vicous as opposed to watery.  Even Dr. Goldstein likes the Systane.

Refresh makes some good products and you can get them in larger sizes.  All the stuff above I get at Shoppers.
