Tonight at 6:30 on Global's 16:9 show, there will be a story on Millan's techniques and the concerns others have about his methods...

Might be worth checking out.  Here's the blurb:

Leader of the Pack

Cesar Millan rose to fame as the Dog Whisperer. His fans bow down to his ability to keep the family pooch in line. But some critics say his advice might do more harm than good. Leslie Roberts has more on the man behind the dog-training empire.

I'm hoping to see it online since I didn't get home from Woofstock until almost 8"15

I only watched a few minutes before being repulsed by his pulling, dragging, rolling, flooding and violently coercing the dogs he was supposedly training.  Couldn't bear to watch any more of that torture.

I'm trying to find one, Sandy, as I'd like to watch it as well.

And whoever is selling prong and choke collars is making a fortune.  I have never seen so many as I saw at Woofstock this weekend.  I'd say every third dog had one on.

Here's a link I found.  I can't say that the episode is riveting nor do I think anyone will change their minds about his training based on it, but here you go:

You didn't miss much.  The segment on Cesar Milan was very short, too short to get into any detail on why many experts disagree with his methods.

Yep.  and in my experience, the devotees of Cesar, Brad, etc simply ARE convinced that he's right and the positive people aren't.  Sad.

Well I knew that there was something wrong with Cesar Milan because Rosie has an absolute fit if he comes on the TV, and we have to change the channel.  She's one very smart pug, so I trust her judgment....Wink

A friend of mine loves him......swears by his techniques and that his theory that all dogs WANT to be dominated by the pack leader (the owner)....his theories makes no sense to me.

One thing that he recommends to his followers is that you not greet or play with your dog when you get home.  He maintains that you should ignore them until they are absolutely calm and lying or sitting quietly to greet them.  This will apparently somehow secure your place at the top of the food chain.  I simply cannot understand how it's negative to show your pet that you are happy to see them and rewarding their desire to spend time with you when you get home by showing them affection.  Rocky would go into a deep sulk if I ignored him...haha

I found it interesting when my friend spoke about his past (as told by him at his presentation in toronto recently) and how stray dogs in Mexico, even if they are starving will not approach food left on the ground if there are people around.  He feels that this is a sign of respect from the dogs.  I suspect this is a sign of extreme fear in the dogs.  They've likely been beaten if they did approach food.

What kills me is that he dominates a dog for 5 minutes on TV or on stage and forces it to comply to his will and people believe that the damn dog is trained....can you tell I dislike this man's training methods intensly!

Angela:
This is actually a widely accepted method of training dogs not to become lunatics when you come home and is part of training dogs that freak out when you leave.  I don't acknowledge my dogs when I come home until I've put my purse away and my coat, etc.  What I want them to do is not go loonie every time someone comes in the house.  Have not been wildly successful with this with the pugs.  BUT this has NOTHING to do with being in charge.  This has to do with getting dogs not to act like a nutbar every time the door is opened.  My pugs are pretty good when I come home, but if anyone else not of the family comes over, you would think my dogs never saw anyone.

I also come home and don't greet Maude right away. Of course she has never once been excited for me to come home, so it is not an issue with her but was for some of the fosters. I always waited to pay attention to them until they settled down. I didn't want to encourage the crazy jumping up so they only got my attention when they finally calmed down. They sort of got it, but it was definitely an on-going training project.
