I am going to change Sully's food over to Orijen or Acana.  He is on Wellness Core Reduced Fat now.  I am wondering how big are the kibbles and do they have constant fish breath?  The wellness is about 1/4-1/2 inch long, I had him on small kibble before they discontinued it.

Pam:
I haven't fed Orijen or Acana for a while so don't really remember what the kibble looks like--but my cats get the Acana formula and theirs is round and flat--about the same size as the Wellness, but flat and disc-like.  I'm assuming, perhaps wrongly, that the canine version is the same.

Orijen is flat and oval/round.  Geeg & Jem do get the fishie breath, too.  Smiley  But no prob with kibble size and pug-scarfing.

I rotate the kids on both Acana and Orijen and they are the same size/shape. I dont know the measurements, but they are not that large. I have never had a problem with fish breath though. Lucky me! I'm a fan of the ingredients in the new Regional Red Orijen formula.

Neither Jem nor Geeg have any food allergies (knock on wood) so i just feed the Orijen for quality...and they like it.  Mind you, they'd probably like boiled sneakers with toe-jam sauce- they really aren't picky.  And you're VERY lucky Krysta- pug-fish-breath can peel paint at 12 paces...

Bugzy, Sophie and Huey all get the Acana Pacifica. Its small(dime sized or less) and flat. Sometimes they have fish breath but not all the time.

Actually, I can sometimes smell it on Sophie (especially) but its her skin and fur that i notice it on. When i bury my face in her shoulder or she is buried in my neck. With the boys I don't notice it the same.

The boys and girl are on Fromm's (no wheat no grains) Surf'n'Turf and Fromm's new line of Beef (no wheat no grains)

The kibble is about 1/4" roundish sizing.
Both flavours, are a big hit with the seniors and the young whipper snapper Wink
I thought that Bubba might have an allergy attack, with the beef as he is allergic to
beef but NADA to that. All was good!

I started the kibble again Sad  only because Pugsley was having difficulties
with picking up ground chicken. Having very few teeth and a tongue that
wants to do its own thing, these days, makes eating difficult for the old
man. I find that he likes "chunky" food as it is easier for him to pick up.
I coat the kibble with the gr chicken and add some chopped veggies/fruits.

Pugsley has a harder time with the flat round kibble; did try it at one time
but went for the Fromm's.

Thank you everyone.  I bought a bag today, when I came in the door I was practically mobbed.  I opened it gave him a couple of kibbles and he was looking for more.  I am going to start weaning him on to it tonight.  He has been scratching his face something fierce lately and licking his paws.

Pam--the Wellness Core Reduced Fat is chicken based so he may be developing an intolerance for chicken.  One of the more common protein allergies.

I bought the Orijen 6 fish formula.  He used to get chicken chew chips, but I had stopped giving those for "weight issues".  The only other thing he gets is sugar snap peas, carrots and melon.  Have you heard of any allergies to any of those?   He has had 4 other types of food in his 3 years, Puppy ,  Lamb and Rice,  Wellness Core and finally Wellness Core Reduced Fat I usually take about a month to wean him. Maybe I should wean him faster than I had in the past.

Another question is he gets 1/4 cup at breakfast and supper.  Should I keep it the same?

he may also be developing an allergy to wheat and grains,
Pugsley is horrible on anything with wheat or grains, hence the
Fromms brand that I get.

You will have to eliminate, in order to see if it has any effect.
take the chicken out of his diet for aobut a  month or 2 and see if that helps
the licking and scratching. If it doesn't, then you know it is another
food source causing the itchies.
Usually as blanche has said it will be meat or with some Pugs, wheat or grains.
Maybe even eggs too as that is, chicken in a way Smiley

If you eliminate chicken to start make sure the ingredients do not list egg.
If there is egg you are not eliminating all the chicken from the diet.

It is a painstaking process, much similar to humans and will have you pulling your hair out at
times. But eventually you will find what is causing the allergic reaction and each Pug or canine is unique in their allergies.
I personally have yet to see any pug allergic to fruit or veggies but there is always a first.
Some Pugs may be sensitive to some veggies though depending on their state of health.
If you use the search on here, there are many good postings on allergy related foods and/or
sensitivities to veggies due to health.

anyhooo, just my 6 cents worth (with the dollar being up, should it be 2 cents again)  Wink

Pam, how long I take to switch from one food to another depends on which dog I am switching.  My Georgie has a cast iron stomach so I could switch him in as little as 4 days.  Mackie's digestive system on the other hand is easily upset so I usually take a full 14 days to switch his food.  I usually keep the portion the same and watch for any change in weight before increasing or decreasing the portion.

Tonight I gave Sully the first time whole 1/4 cup of food.  He has not had an issues weaning at all.  We thought he looked like he was losing weight.  I weighed him tonight and he was 27 pounds, in August at the vets he was almost 29 pounds.  I think I will keep him at 1/4 cup twice a day but if he gets down too much I will increase the amount up to 1/3 a cup.
