I don't know where to start with my Melvin and his health issues lately. . Melvin is on Thyroids meds as he has an underactive thyroid. Which I find funny as he is just like his mom, but he takes a higher dose than me. We found out he had the thyroid problem when he went for his blood test before he has surgery on his eyes because of Entropion. The vet tested his thyroid because he has gained weight. I also wanted her to look at Melvin as he seemed to be in some pain when I lifted him sometimes. The vet said it might be the way I picked him up because of the extra weight. Wrong. On Saturday he was in a lot of pain when I touched him so we went to the emergency Vet. His anal sacs were infected but also he seemed to be in too much pain for that so she did x-rays ( which I was happy about because I knew something was wrong with him, he just wasn't himself). She gave him antibiotics for the anal sacs. We went back to the vet on Monday to check his anal sacs were getting better and the results of his x-rays. The vet says Melvin has suspected Hip Dysplasia and Arthritis. He is on anti inflammatory and we are waiting to see how they do. For now Melvin is Prince Melvin because he can't climb the stairs so he gets carried up the stairs and gets all his meds mixed in Tripe. He is in a lot of pain so hopefully that will go away soon. After all that he is also missing a rib. We are thinking of changing his name to Adam. lol
Anyone with any advice greatly appreciated.
I wouldn't trade Melvin for anything but it makes me so mad about unethical breeding. I didn't know much about unethical breeding before i had Melvin and Pugalug. I always knew not to buy from a pet store but I never thought about people just breeding to make money.Very stupid on my part to think people did it for the love of animals and the breed. That's my little rant at the end but I'm just so upset of all the crap Melvin has to go through. Any advice greatly appreciated Thanks.

I dont have any advice, but just wanted to offer my support!

Aaw geez Carol, I'm sorry to hear about your Melvin.  I have no experience with any of his issues but I'm sending hugs to you and your Boy. And please watch your back, your Melvin's a lot of Pug to be carrying up the stairs. |

Well Crap! First. let me say not to sweat the thyroid deal--Tank is hypthyroid and has been for years. He does just fine on the meds with almost no issues.
As to the other stuff--a couple of recommendations. I don't know what anti-inflammatory he is on, but I had trouble with both metacam and rimadyl when used in the long term. I put Lola on Previcox and that worked much better--no gastric issues at all.
You might ask about tramadol if he's in alot of pain. It will really help with the pain management.
Finally, when he's in good enough shape for it, consider taking him to Canine Wellness. Tania has tons of experience with both HD and arthritis and may have some exercises he could do that will help. Likely swimming would be allowed for him.
And don't beat yourself up. You didn't know--how could you? You learned and that's the important thing here. Yes, the bad breeders drive us all crazy, but right now, you just take care of Melvin (and watch your own back carrying that big boy around!)

We use Previcox here too. Our old man (bulldog) lived in a kennel on the cement for years and could hardly walk. He is on Previcox and supplements and can get up the back stairs and walk short distances by himself.
And we use green lipped sea muscle, which you can't use if there are fish allergies, but have had great results with many of our seniors.

Oh, Melvin, my favourite frog prince, I'm so sorry to hear that you are having problems. I know your Mommy is going to take the very best care of you! I hope the meds help, dear prince, and that they relieve the pain you are in!

I'm so sorry to hear that Melvin is in so much pain on top of all his other troubles. Hopefully the pain meds and antibiotics are giving him some relief and he feel more like himself very, very soon. (((Hugs))) to you Carol.

I would really consider Canine Wellness. Tania is fantastic. Tramadol is a medication that Salvador takes and it really improved his ability to walk better, as he was in pain. He is doing much better.
I haven't had a dog with HD, but my cat has it and does very well. She has had a few episodes, over the years, of limping. I give her Sasha's Blend, which seems to help. Keeping the weight down will also help...less stress on the joints.
I hope he feels less discomfort really soon.

We are going back to the vet again tonight as Melvins pain doesn't seem to be getting better. If anything his pain and mobility are getting worse. He can't even climb a curb now. He is on Metacam and it isn't doing anything for him. I'm going to ask about Tramadol. Melvin is in pain and not happy but is still the sweetest marshmellow. Thanks for all the advice and I will keep you all posted.

Not that I've noticed, Amanda. Carol--the metacam will only do so much for pain--it's primary purpose is as an anti-inflammatory. That's why I suggested the tramadol. When Lola hurt her back she stayed on her Previcox and got tramadol. |

Oh Boy oh boy this boy of mine!!! Well he is on tramadol now with the metacom. The vet said he does have Hip Dsysplasia but doesn't think that is what is causing his pain. Now they want to test him for Degenerative Disc Disease. Tomorrow the vet is putting the referral in for Melvin to see the neurologist. Hopefully he will start feeling better soon.
Thanks you all for your help and guidance as i am having a very hard time with this. I am so glad for this forum. Approximately a year after paying pet insurance and not using it, I posted on the forum Asking if I should keep the pet insurance? Many people said YES! I'm so glad now that I listened as this week alone has cost approximately $1000. So at least I don't have to worry where the money for all this will come from. I guess I could of sold one of my kidneys. lol
