Our poor little Emi has yet another urinary infection and crystals--this time the infection is resistant to most antibiotics.  Sadly, we have never been able to get her fully infection or crystal free. The fact that she is now getting resistant infections is a very ominous sign.

We may have to make some tough decisions about our little girl.  Keep her and Candace in your thoughts and prayers.

So sorry to hear about Emi, this is such a difficult problem.  Our thoughts are with Candace and we are hoping and praying the antibiotics will work.

Unfortunately, we've never been able to get Emi fully healthy.  She's had infections and crystals almost without stop since coming into rescue.  She's getting worse and not better.

She has fought hard for the last 7.5 months, but I don't know that we should ask her to fight any longer when she will only continue to get sicker.

Is she still active and eating?  In your experience, if the antibiotics don't work what is the time frame like for her before you need to make a decision?

Amanda:
this isn't the first, second, third or even fourth round of antibiotics she's been on.  She's been on multiple meds, had numerous procedures, tried all manner of things to fully void her bladder and each infection is worse than the last one.
We will be letting her go.  We can't ask her to continue this way.  She's been fighting this for 7.5 months and even our vet agrees that we aren't doing her any favours.

She was able to fight on for 71/2 months, which is pretty tough. If the antibiotics are no longer working for her, what else can be done to improve her situation?  If nothing else can work for her, then you may have a very tough decision on your hands, definitely a hard call.  She has been so endearing at the Pugalugs, scampering around with her little diaper on.

Deb:
There isn't anything we can do.  We could let her go on and on getting more infections and taking harsher drugs, but there is no cure here and no management.  It's not living.  It's keeping her alive so we don't have to make the tough decision to let her go.  Frankly, the antibiotics have never reallyw orked for her as the infections never really went away.  she'd get another as soon as the antibiotics cleared her system and all we are doing is encouraging resistant infections by constantly having her on antibiotics.
Every infection has been worse than the last one and her mobility is declining.  It's time to let her go.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. Although a very difficult decision, it is what is best for Emi. That is what matters now. We did everything possible. She put up with lots of tests and poking and prodding. Now it's time for her to be done with all that.
Please think of her tomorrow and light a candle for her to find her way to the Rainbow Bridge.
May she run free.
