What to do if your dog is ......................

Hit by a car:
Dogs hit by a car don't know why they are in pain.
Even if your dog is sweet-natured he/she may bite if handled. Protect yourself by tying a rope or shoelace around his/her muzzle. If oyur dog can walk, lead him/her off the road. If he/she can't walk, pull him/her onto a blanket and caryy, hammock style. Once you are in a safe place, control the bleeding, if any, and then get immediate help from your veterinarian or vet emerg clinic.

Bleeding:
If your dog has been lacerated on any part of his/her body, put direct pressure on the bleeding site with a clean absorbent pad.
Do not remove the pad from the site - you will disturb the clot and it will start bleeding again. If the pad becomes full of blood, put another on top of the first one and hold it in place.
Get help immediateley from your veterinarian or vet emerg clinic.

Overheated:
If you suspect your dog is over heated and needs immediate cool down, do so gradually!!
Run room-temp water in a bathtub or into a sink and place your dog in it. Run the water over the head, neck and back.
If he/she remains weak and does not respond to your voice, or continues to paddle the water, he/ she could be going into shock and you should seek immediate emerg treatment!

Suffering from a broken limb:
If your dog refuses to put hisor her limb down and use it they may be suffering from a fractured bone.
You should immediately immobilize your pet to reduce bone movement and pain.
Get him/her onto a board or into a blanket and transport him/her right away to your veterinarian or vet emerg clinic.
