It's caused by a mite that everyone (even us) has on their bodies, but in immune compromised dogs it becomes mange. And it can be the devil to get rid of. He's had month and months of chemical treatments and no improvement. So I'm going to try the naturopathic route with him for a while. His immune system is shot. Welcome little Jem!
That's exactly how our Vet explained it to us. My Lola had a dime sized patch of demodectic mange on her forehead when she was a puppy and luckily enough because it was detected early and with treatments of Ivermectin, we were able to combat the mites successfully , but it took several months.
Blanche, hoping the naturopathic route will net better results for the dear little soul.

I met him and he is very sweet, but not sweet smelling! It always amazes me how animals put up with so much discomfort and pain, still managing to show their love of life. I can't wait to see him improving and being able to enjoy his puppyhood.

He is a mess. My vet did a skin scrape and said she's never seen an infestation this bad in her career. He is literally covered in demodex mites (I saw them under the microscope--ICK, ICK, ICK) and has conjunctivitis, multiple skin infection besides the mites, etc. So we will have to do the chemical thing--but a different more aggressive treatment. I will continue to immune boost him, but he is literally being eaten alive.

Oh dear, Blanche, I know what you mean about the ICK, ICK, ICK... after one of my Lola's scrapings, the Vet let me look under the microscope too... my skin is crawling as I write this!
I'm really hoping the Vet can get a handle on this for the little guy's sake.

Oh the poor little guy. I am so glad that he is with you Blanche - you will know how to help him get better. I think the natural treatments and proper food will help too. Is he able to take the Modu-care you recommended for Maude or is he too young?
I already have a soft spot for this little guy. Jem was my nickname for many years and when I was a photographer, I used to use it sometimes if I didn't want the photo credit in my name.

My little foster guy, Jem, could use some items of clothing. He gets very cold very fast since he has almost no fur and I'm using some essential oils and colloidal oatmeal on his skin to reduce his itchiness and flakiness.
I'd like to (1) keep him warm and (2) try to keep the oils and oatmeal on him and off my furniture and dog beds (to dream the impossible dream..)
So if you have any T-shirts, light weight sweaters, etc that would fit him, Please send them along to me. I will likely do a Valu Village run for him, but figured if folks had stuff lying around, I'd make the plea.
He's built like a boston terrier--long and tall. His length is 16/17 inches, 14 around the neck and 20 around the chest. He's 8+ kilos.
If you have anything that he might be able to use, let me know and I'll PM you my address
Cotton would be best--I need fabric that breathes. NO WOOL.

At the Flower Power Pugalug I remember someone donating a high quality doggie t-shirt, perhaps it was Mark, it definitely had additude? I will look too, does it have to be gender specific and 100% cotton?
