Hi Tracy,
I'm moving your post over to the Health section and there is a Vaccine and Medication area there that might be helpful.

Lori :)

Hi PugFolk
My little Liam is right on  the edge of the weight range for the HeartGuard tabs I use.
The dosage is good for 1 - 11 kgs....and Liam is EXACTLY 11 kgs (24.2 pounds).

My vet suggested I "dose high" - in other words...push his medication into the next weight class....but that would mean he's getting a HeartGuard dosage suitable for a dog up to 50 pounds!

My question: Am I right in thinking that "dosing low" is safer for his little organs?  I've always believed that to be the case...and have done this with my other puglets that were on the "edge".

I am just curious and want to make sure he's well covered.  Like many, I hate putting any chemicals into Liam and Lacey unless absolutely essential.

Any input will be very gratefully received!  Thanks everyone.

Marie -  given the toxic nature of these chemicals, I too am a believer in dosing lower than higher.

Another consideration is splitting heartworm meds between two or more dogs.  When I had just Mei-Ling and Kim-Soo, the vet used to give me the large tablet and had me cut it in two.  He told me to be careful in ensuring they were about equal proportions as my girls were about equal weights at the time.  This led me to believe that there was nothing exactly precise about dosing.

I'm reading this months later, but have something to add. Salvador was quite sensitive to this kind of thing, so my vet gave me a syringe and told me the exact dosage, based on his weight. I would put the syringe in the little vial and pull out the exact amount and throw away the rest.
