Hello Pug Peeps,
My tan pug Dewey who is 8.5 years old is having an issue. Yesterday he was very lethargic when we got up - more than normal. I came home and noticed his stomach area, especially on the right side had swollen up. He eats, poops and pees all normally. No vomitting, just lethargic.
Today he is a little bit better as he was cleaning his snot-puss on the carpet when I came in, he actually shook outside which he did not do yesterday or this morning. And he was playing with the sock a little more today.
It could be stress related as I just started a new job last week but before that I have been off work since July 2008. I must admit I loved being home with them!!!! It has not been an easy time in finding a job and am struggling financially.
Prayers and suggestions are welcome. Thank you, Denise

I'm not a pug health expert, but as a nurse (for the human species), I'd be concerned about abdominal swelling. However, I will defer to the expert advice of those here!!

Denise, I also am not an expert on Pug health, but I've heard of Bloat where one of the symptoms is swelling of the belly along with other symptoms. There are others on this Forum that are much more versed on these issues and maybe able to help you. Hope you can find some answers for your Dewey.
Here's some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloat

Hi Denise, first of all, congrats on your new job Now for Dewey, I would say the same thing, I'd be concerned about the bloating, it could be something he ate or it could be perhaps something internal, I'm thinking if it is still swollen in the am, maybe have the Vet look at him. Just to be safe and take some of the stress off you at this time. Lori

If it is bloat, it can be extremely dangerous. It can be caused by stress and extension of the stomach (grossly overeating) I have seen both causes. The belly is extremely overextented and firm to the touch. The stomach can twist and result in surgery. I would think tenderness or any swelling should be seen ASAP by a vet to determine the cause.

Thank you for your posts!
I talked with the vet yesterday and we decided to take it day by day. This morning Dewey was a little more active. He shook twice and actively searched for the sock and had a chew on his bone.
I am at work now and will assess him when I get home early this afternoon.
Still eating, pooping and peeing normally.

Dewey update.
I took him to the vet Thursday (yesterday) for blood work and x-rays and all returned back normal. His blood was "bang on" according to the vet who went through the blood test with me. He was pleasantly surprised about the results. The x-ray did not reveal any blockages or any excessive liquids in the stomach or abdomen. Everything appeared to be normal.
The vet said that if there are any cancerous growths, an ultrasound would reveal that. So that would be the next step. The vet suggested that he could lose a couple of pounds - I will start that process.
His right leg is very sore as I think he may have taken a tumble one morning off of the bed. His right back leg is stiff to begin with. That does not help either. His stomach swelling I think has gone down.
I am somewhat at a loss for now but happy he is at home. He slept right up against me all night long last night.
If you have a moment, please send Dewey a prayer - it is much appreciated. Denise

Hope everything goes well for the little guy. Hopefully it's nothing, just some weight needs to be shed.
