Introduction - March 28 http://www.pugalug.com/jasper2009.html[attachment=0:3b1y6ndi]jasper2.jpg[/attachment:3b1y6ndi] And we celebrate Earth Hour with a new arrival - a delightful, earthy little pug named Jasper. He has an easy, energetic and playful personality. He is blind in one eye due to an old eye injury that was not properly taken care of. The eye vet has said the other eye is in tip top shape. And his general health appears to also be very good. He is a little anxious right now, as he was dearly loved by his owner. A change in life circumstances of the owner has meant he has had to come into our care. He stood watching in the park at first as Dante, Dublin and Odin played. But after awhile he started to join in. And he met our neighbour's female pug Tommie in the back yard.

Odin and Jasper were sleeping side by side last night on the floor so I guess the bonded at the party. Also, Jasper is still intact so I guess Odin has to put a little extra effort into establishing Who's Boss.

Update - March 31
Jasper has settled comfortably into our routine. He has a lovely little way of saying "I Love You". He jumps up on to my lap, rests his paws on my chest, bends down and gives me a little lick on the ear lobe. It is just the endearment one needs at the end of a work day to put a smile on your face and know everything alright in the pug world. Socially, Jasper is a dream pug. I took Jasper to Pugsley's 16th Birthday. It was held at Doggie Central. When I got there, I unleashed Jasper and away he went to greet both puggies and humans alike. I rarely saw him he was having such a good time. Occasionally he would stop by, sniff my pant leg to be reassured I was still around, and then off to see his new friends. People remarked on how sociable he was, like he had been coming to pugalug gatherings his whole life. I'll put up a couple of pics on the weekend
Jasper loves his walks. When I go for the leash, he is at my feet, spinning in excited circles. He stops long enough for me to put the harness on, then it's little hippty hops to the door. On the walk, he is out front, leading the pack, nose exploring his new neighbourhood. Once the excitement wears off, I will work on this heel.
At night, he first likes to bury his face into the comforter, eventually rolling on to his back for a belly rub. Then, when he is ready to sleep, he plops his backside along my thigh and is out until the morning.
He goes for his vet check up on Monday, April 5th. His neutering and micro chipping is scheduled for April 15th.

Update - April 6
Jasper's vet visit went very well. He sat quietly (well, except for the heavy snoring) while Dr. Usher checked out the little guy. Everything is okee-dokey. He weighs 19 lbs - which accounts for his energy level and love of walks. However, they contacted his first vet and it turns out Jasper was never vaccinated there. So we have to delay his neutering until after the vaccinations have settled into his system. So I'll be getting my ear lobes licked a little longer. He had no reaction to the vaccine and is now sleeping soundly beside me. He will be getting blood work and fecal test done on April 28th We plan to have the neutering done mid-May
Meanwhile, Jasper has settled into the routine of the household. There have been no integration problems with Odin, Dublin or Dante. He likes to sleep on an old yoga mat I have (maybe he was a yogi in a past life). He initiates play with the smaller dogs in the dog park but tends to shy away from the larger ones. When he is not playing with another dog, he will go up to the other dog owners in the park and quiety greet them. He does not jump up on people (unlike some pugs who will remain nameless ;>
He relishes his breakfast and dinner. He's getting Orijen. He did have some gas at first as his digestive system adjusted to the new, grain free food. He does not care for the cookies I give the other guys but loves the dried liver treats. I'm using these to work on his recall in the park (which is getting much better). And I picked up some brisket and marrow bones for him to try. He gave the bone one sniff and then hauled the bone to his yoga mat and stayed with it the whole night. So he'll be getting those regularly as we work some of the tarter off.
All in all he is a wonderful, happy little pug who will make a loving companion to someone when he is ready to be adopted.

Update - April 13
Well, little Jasper did, not one, but TWO shifts at the All About Pets show this past weekend. And there was one little tired pug at the end of it all. But he did so well, greeting the crowds of people, letting the children pet him (and giving him pieces of liver treats for sitting on command. And he was very friendly with the various therapy dogs in the booth next door He was the perfect rescue pug ambassador. So, I'm happy to report that he is very sociable but does not get overly excited when new and strange circumstances are happening around him. He trusts that his human companion will be looking out for him.
Jasper goes in this week for his booster shot, blood and fecal tests. I'll have a vet report at the end of the week.
