My poor Harley, the last few days his mobility has got pretty bad. I noticed he is really dragging his rear paws and the tops of the nails are worn, even noticed blood the other day, but typical puggie wouldn't let me touch his feet and the bleeding did stop quickly. So I have been carrying him to the grass so he doesn't make it worse. Are there any booties that might help? That is if I can touch his feet long enough to get them on! Or any other ideas? And could the scraped nails be making it more difficult for him to get on his feet?

Hi Julie,

So sorry to hear about Harleys' situation!

When Honey was having a bad time of it,
I used baby socks and held them on with sticky
bandage tape. Had to keep an eye on them as she would get out of them from time to time.
You might also try using the stretch sticky gauze?!?!?
I would wash and reuse it with Honey.

I'm not sure, but booties might also work. They velcro at the top, but with the dragging not sure how or if they would stay on that well?!?!?

hope the suggestions work and maybe someone else will come up with other good ideas.
Hugs to Harley!

Like you did, I just carry mine over the asphalt and only let them walk on grass That would be Gooey and Mei-Ling.

Thanks for the info, so far Harley is still be carried to the grass, but when I stopped at the vets for cat food I asked about that sticky guaze tape and they were nice enough to give me some. So I will try that tommorrow if it's not wet outside. It should work much better than socks if I put it on properly!

When my Oscar arrived, we had the same problem.  I put boots on his front feet when we went for walks.  I would put duct tape over the area of each boot that would show wear.  After a few months of TLC, Oscar's strength and muscle tone improved enough that the boots wer no longer necessary, but would be easy enough to use long term for Harley.

Hi Julie,

You can try using balloons.  I buy medium size balloons at the dollar store.  I cut the top off (where you blow into the balloon) so the balloon is now a circle.  I stretch the balloon and put over my puggie's paws during the winter.  It works like a charm.  I tried booties before and she didn't want to walk... lol.  She would just kick the booties and they would be flying across the room!

Good luck!

LOL, duct tape and it's many uses!! That was actually my first thought but couldn't figure out how to make it work! The balloon is also interesting but not sure it would stay on, if it does that would be really easy!

Yes purchase infant socks and keep them on with the self adhering bandaging from the vet. A friends Yorkie had back issues and she wore the socks for months until she had recovered. They work well.

Well keeping Harley off the patio has really helped, so he isn't as bad as a few days ago!! Still having a real problem getting anything onto his feet, boy can he be miserable!! Hubby got one wrapped but it only lasted a day. So for now I'm getting a work-out carrying a 28# pug!! Yes he is a big boy and only about a # or 2 overweight thanks to feeding that yummy s/d.

Smiley
It is why I had to buy a 3 wheelie for PugMan Wink
Honey would have them off in less than that, although she was good
about "pit stops for repairs" Smiley
Something will come up that will work for your Harley Smiley

I also sympathize with you; Roscoe has had this problem since he was less than a year old.  Balloons (as posted above) work for us.
Then one leg began getting worse; I made a sling from a human what-do-you-call-those-things that are flesh-coloured and you wrap them around limbs for support/sore muscles/shin-splint, etc.  I just loop it under his leg and hold both ends (still have to hold leash, but made a shorter one).

But Roscoe's problem is slowly getting worse, and I'm beginning to look for the wheels/cart solution for longer walks.  Can anyone recommend resources in the GTA (Toronto area) or further east?

Cheers!

Please check out Canine Wellness Centre on Cranfield (O'Connor and Bermondsey).  It is an animal rehab centre and Tania Costa (the owner) can help with physio as well as fitting your puglet for a cart.

Thank-you, Blanche.  We're in Scarborough--so the centre must be very close by.

Poor Roscoe to have this problem from so young. You are talking about a sprain bandage, right? That is a good idea, glad it's working for you. I may have to consider a cart one of these days, but Harley is not the most cooperative pug. Roscoe sounds much easier, so he should adapt to that well. Keep us posted.
