One of our newest fosters, Winnie, is a pretty sick little girl. She has been to the vet and has a number of problems. Her hips are terrible, she has bladder stones, bad teeth, some spinal calcification and still needs to be spayed.
We will be going slowly with the Winster and taking care of one thing at a time, but she has three surgeries ahead of her and will need lots of recuperation time. Sad to think that someone was selling her to a breeding farm before a good samaritan stepped in.
We will be dedicating the funds from the Pugoweens to her care--she's going to be a costly girl.......

Winnie and Bruce spent the day at my house on Friday in transit to their foster homes and they are, without doubt, two of the happiest little muffins I've ever met, despite Winnie's health conditions. Personality plus. The thought of them going to a puppy mill just makes my stomach churn! Two more examples of why we must educate people not to buy dogs online or in pet stores. The next litter or two of puppies might have killed Winnie. She and all the other poor misfortunates deserve much, much better.

I just read the update on sweet Winnie and wish her all the best.
We used Cartrophen (sp) injections on one of our puppy mill rescues and it helped a great deal. After the initial series of injections we kept her on it for maintenance. When we got her she could only walk a few steps; after a few months she was able to go up and down the four stairs of the back deck and wander the yard. I hope Winnie has positive effects, too.

Imagine all of the puppies she has produced that will end up with the same health problems as her........ health testing needs to be mandatory and the law if you want to breed your dog.
I don't know if anyone watched the "pedigree Dogs exposed" when it was up in youtube ( I think they may have removed it) but it compares the genetic diversity of the purebred pug to that of the giant panda...... kind of scary.

Yes, our Winnie is in for a long haul. she has severe Legge-Calve-Perthes in both hips, sockets are abnormal, has ear infections, disc compression/herniation along her shoulder line, and bladder stones. Not mention bad teeth and she needs to be spayed. So she will be getting alot of surgery, sadly. We'll double up when we can to avoid putting her under more than necessary, but she is a mess.
And, yes Puglucky, she has probably mass produced puppies with Legge-Calve-Perthes which is a heritable condition. Makes the blood boil.

My brother was diagnosed with Legg Perthes when he was a child - not fun! Guess it makes sense that dogs can have it, too.
Lola and I are rooting for wee Winnie and I'm sending my best thoughts to her and to her brave fosters!

Hi Everyone; Check out my challenge to all!! Under "Events" Winnie's Pugowe'en Fundraiser!! Winnie needs a lot of surgeries and I'm hoping everyone will help out by taking me up on my challenge!! It doesn't take much to set out a bucket on an office lunch table (where permission has been granted) to scoop any pocket change. It all adds up and helps a little lady become more comfortable and possibly have a better life in the future with less pain and a new family that will luv her to pieces I'm doing it at work and have emailed all my family and friends to help out, if they can.

Winnie doing very well. She is definitely settling in and learning to get along with her foster brother and sister. Its hard at first to get the new housemates to trust each other but in the last few days Winnie is more willing to play a bit and less growly if the others approach. It takes some time especially given her history as a breeder dog. In some ways it hard to believe its only been a few weeks as she came it us at the end of September.
She is feeling better with the cartrophen injections, & Sasha's blend & is more active as a result. Winnie is a bit clumsy at times and her back feet are not as stable at times as most dogs are & she slips easily when she is trying to be more active or gets bumped ( especially in the initial excitement at feeding time or treat time.... .... but again we are working to get her to slow down, relax and by sliding the treat out between curled fingers she is unable to grab at it.
Overall, she is loving, funny and very affectionate. Wins has a real sense of humour & joy in her new life, she also loves to sleep in the big bed - this is one of her favourite places - and often sleeps on the pillow with me her head resting on mine. She also loves to give kisses, her little tongue sneaks out from the side making it hard to avoid her slurps.

Thank you so much for that update! I often think about Winnie throughout my day wondering how she is doing. Her start in life was so terrible it is wonderful to see that she is getting a great new start. It is really a wonderful thing that you and all the fosters, volunteers, fundraisers and the many many others who work so hard for these beautiful animals do everyday.
I look forward to hearing about her progress in the coming months.

.... no stones!!!!
Tomorrow - Wednesday -Miss Wins goes for her second x-ray for her bladder stones. Here is hoping 6 weeks of the SO diet, clamavox etc... will have worked enough magic that bladder surgery will not be needed. And she goes back to the regular grain free diet we use.... yes i am another grain free feeder.
She is not "dribbling" anymore & no longer needs a diaper. There does not seem to be blood anymore either - that we can see at least.
Positive signs but she could do with some good wishes!! We'll know by tomorrow afternoon.. [/i]
