I have several sets of doggy steps in my house so the mobile ones can climb onto and off the sofas and bed. But they have removable covers which can be washed. Every so often Giant Tiger has them on for half price - $20.
I have 2 steps between my kitchen and great room ( i.e. kitchen floor - step - great room floor). Some of mine can do the steps and some can't but can do the home-made ramp I fashioned from a piece of board (MDF, I think) covered by a rubber-backed rug (which also can be washed). I fold a couple of beach towels on the step under the ramp for protection for the steps and to angle the ramp properly so they can reach the 2nd step/great room floor. It has worked well for a couple of years. However, we are starting to have some renovations done so I'm going to have the carpenter build a ramp which fits right into the stair but can be folded down and/or moved. I am having him make the ramp 24" wide for the pugs but doing another 12" section which can be put beside it to total 36" for use as a human wheelchair ramp for our senior relatives and friends. I'm having him custom make a long baby-gate (the stairway opening is 96") to incorporate into the scenario. I'll try and take before and after pictures. The carpenter is coming tomorrow to discuss what work needs to be done.
Here's the "before". On the left end of the step, that's a folded up X-pen that I am currently using as an 8 ft. babygate when I go out. I bought it at a local auction for $10!!
