We got Scout from the Humane Society in 1996.  She was the only dog in the shelter that didn't scare my then young son to death.  She was quiet and retiring.  Clearly scared.  We adopted her that day.  She went on to live with us for 11 years.  And she was rarely any trouble at all.
We finally said good bye to her on April 2007,  She was 13, 14 or 15 depending on who's age guess you believed.  She was a wonderful dog, the protector of the Boy and my constant companion in the fostering job.

A good dog.

What a beautiful girl!  She has that look of someone who makes you feel peaceful in their company.

She was a fabulous dog.  I always wondered how she ended up in a shelter as a stray.  She came to me with tons of obedience training, tricks, etc.  Someone had put some time into her.
Hands down, one of the safest, sweetest, most reliable dogs I've ever had.  she was a border collie cross--crossed with something big, web footed and water loving.  She was a hefty 65 to 70 lbs.  When the blind dogs would get lost in the yard, I could say to her "Scout, go get Pete" and she'd go out in the yard and lead whoever (Pete or Hazel) back to my sidewalk so they could find their way to the door.
We miss her very much.
