Raw marrow bones here too. I freeze them for at least 24 hours first. Each one goes to their designated spot and chews for hours. Even dentally challenged Percy enjoys them and Hazel has also been educated on the joys of marrow bones. Poor wee girl didn't know what to do with one the first time I gave her one.

My dogs get real bones and we have them floating around the house, after they are cleaned off of the meat. They will chew on them for months.

Another marrow bone person here. I also get smoked knee bones from my local pet store--Jeff's Bark and Scratch for those of you in the east end of Toronto. They are slightly less messy, but just as hard to break up and keep my guys entertained for quite a while. Even the 70 lb BC cross can't demolish them. Mind you, the dogs all have smokey breath afterwards but it's worth the peace I get.

thanks Deb, I got the marrow bone (raw) and I picked up a smoked one from Bark'n Scratch today. Tiger is beside me now going at the raw one and loves it...I don't think he'll even notice the rawhides missing now.

Dear Tigers other Mom,

One other thing I forgot to mention is that I trim the fat off if there is a lot and sometimes do a 'mid trim' if it gets too goopy and looks like they could gag or choke on it. Glad you have found a good bone supply!

Beef marrow bones or knuckle bones are available at every good butcher. They last forever and my 3 pugs just love them. They're excellent and contain no chemical or artificial flavor or colour.
I go to my butcher once a month and ask him to cut a huge knuckle bone in 3 (for Chocho, Peachy & Bijou) and it cost me less than 5$.

So after people mentioning smoked marrow bones I went to our local (and very good) Pet Valu. She recommended a smoked knuckle bone, and said Bugsy would think he had died and gone to heaven....well she was right! Oh my gosh, other than the times I have taken it away (bedtime!) he hasn't left it alone. He won't put it down and even chases the cat (his favourite pastime) with it hanging out of his mouth. Now the problem is, he wants to take it outside to go and do his business - so I take it away, and he won't go out!! His little bladder must be at bursting point by now

Bugsy loves hooves too, he has one that lasts forever. It doesn't seem to be getting any smaller (it does stink though when he's been chewing for a bit and it's all soggy!). He also loves baby carrots. I don't know if it's becauase he's still young (4 months) but he does not "get" the kong at all. We've tried with the stuff hanging out so he gets the taste and the idea, but he really does not either seem to know what to do with it, or he can't get the stuff out and looses interest. I have the tiny puppy one so I don't think it's too big. Everyone else's dogs seem to love them!!

Good idea to stay away from the rawhides, one of our pug members ended up with her puggie at U of Guelph getting emergency abdominal surgery to remove a piece of rawhide blocking him. That kept me away from them for good.

This is an old article but just came up on one of my other lists and I thought it was worth sharing.
