Sully was on Nutro Natural Choice Small Bites Lite and they are no longer making it.  I changed him two weeks ago and took two weeks to wean him off the other food to Science Diet Small Bites Lite.  For the past 3 days his poops have become runnier and now completely the runs.  He has gotten up in the night last night at 2:30 and the night before at 4:30 to go.  I have to change his food again but want him off the Science Diet NOW since something is obviously no agreeing with him.  Should I still wean him or change immediately?

Hi Pam;

just my 2 cents,
I would get a very high grade kibble, ones that are touted on here from other pug people are, Orijen, Timber Wolf etc.
He could be allergic to many foods or just one and it might be hard to determine what.
But perhaps a grain free would be the way to go first.
Pugs have allergies to many things and it may take you time to find out what Sully is allergic to.

My Bubba is allergic to anything with beef in it.
I have the guys on grain free and RAW and they are doing great.

A slow or gradual change over to a new food is more for his system to get used to it when a pug is fine with what they are currently eating; but if you suspect it is Sully's current food making him this way, myself, I would not hesitate to change Sully right away to a new food, as long as he likes it and takes it willingly. Some Pugs can be very picky eaters.

Try a search on "grain free" on this site; it will pull up all the threads pertaining to that type of food.

Hope this helps. Poor Sully, sad when they get that way :(

Do you suspect the food or could there be something else going on??

I agree.  No harm in this case of switching over immediately.  And I'm with Sully - Science Diet ---- blech!

I went through something similar with our girl a while ago and had to change her food, due to this.  Maybe see the vet to rule out any other causes and have a stool sample done just to be sure.  Here's hoping you have solid stool soon.

Thankfully he is otherwise normal, but I am sure his little pug butt is not.  When they told me they were not making his food anymore and recommended the Science Diet, I was hesitant and had serious doubts for no reason.  I should have went with my instincts.

When I changed from Orijen to Timber Wolf I was going to do it slowly but it didn't work out that way. My two were fine with the change. Firm poops and not any stomach problems. Orijen and Timberwolf are both grain free so maybe thats why it worked well. Hopefully this helped hope your guy feels better soon. :(

Well it is a couple of days shy of 2 weeks on the new food and Sully is "Solid"  actually he was by the second day.  Thankfully!  He loves his food I went with the Canidae all life stage formula, my new problem is the 2 pounds he has put back on in 2 weeks.  He still is getting 1/3 cup at breakfast and 1/3 cup at supper like the previous food and still is walking 4 times a day for a total of 5km.  My husband being well trained initial reaction was maybe he is just a little bloated!  It isn't working this time it's the real weight gain.

While I am writing this correction Sully is sitting on the computer desk watching that I post it right.  We just came back from the scale and he has only gained 1 pound, I apologize.
