Author Topic: What brand of dog food is safe??  (Read 825 times)

I'm very confused and concerned about what food is safe to feed Rocky.  I've been reading some of the horror stories about what is in some of the food and the animal cruelty allegations against companies like Iams (which is what Rocky has been eating!!)

Confusing the issue for me is the fact that some vets seem to be getting endorsement monies from some of the companies so I'm not sure that the brands that they are pushing on me are any better.

Can anyone offer any suggestions??

Thanks!!

A lot of the food recalls were due to problems with glutens.  I only feed no grain kibbles (although my guys get primarily raw)
The ones I trust and haven't had any issues with are:
Orijen fish formula
Barking at the Moon
Innova Evo
Wellness Core
Go! grain free

I home prepare raw food (no grains) so I know exactly what's going into their little bodies.

I do home made too! However, I have incorporated both Orijen and a new one I found recently called Before B.G. Grain by Merrick; which has Acai berries and blueberries in both preparations with the 2 preparations having either Buffalo or Salmon as the main ingredients and 2 other meats along with all kinds of goodies.

The boys get the homemade for most of their meals and I do half a 1/4 cup now of "Grain free" kibble in their breakfast meals and half a homemade prep of mixed beans.
I also use the Grain free kibbles for treats and the boys are nose diving for them as soon as they smell the kibble Wink
but the scratching also seems to have stopped, somewhat.
The ears are also looking so much better :)

I have been feeding Timber Wolf Ocean Blue Grain free. Melvin and Pinky have had yucky ears and I wanted to try with no eggs in the kibble. I would like to do raw but can't bring myself to do it yet.

You are not alone!
Wink
I do want to say (tongue in cheek here) since I started them on the grain free products, their fur is not "floating" off them when either of the boys shake or scratch?!?! Wahoo for me and am wondering what in the grain free could be doing this??? I even, shhhh, pulled on their fur and only a few furs came out; not the usual humungous clumps; even giving a "bum scratch" has produced very few hairs floating off

At some point you might try the RAW and it is I think, for most, getting their heads around the actual results in what they will see as a health benefit for their puglets. Plus it has to be something you can incorporate into your lifestyle.

Petunia has been eating Before Grain but I'm not sure about it. I realized the other day that it has yeast in it. Her face still seems to be itchy but I can't figure out if it is the food or allergies to something outdoors. You'll have to let me know how your boys take to it. I've gone to Orijen for now.

Here is the Before Grain ingredient list for anyone who hasn't heard of it. This one is Buffalo/Chicken, they also have Salmon/Chicken or Chicken/Chicken.

Buffalo Deboned, Chicken Meal, Potato Dehydrated, Turkey Meal, Canola Oil, Sweet Potato Dehydrated, (preserved with mixed tocopherols – a source of Natural Vitamin E and Ascorbic Acid, a source of Vitamin C), Yeast Culture, Natural Dried Chicken Liver, Dicalcium Phosphate, Lysine, Guar Gum, Sea Salt, Alfalfa, Salmon Oil, Choline Chloride, Acai Berry Freeze-Dried, Blueberry Dried, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Venison Broth, Zinc Amino Acid Complex,Chondroitin Sulfate, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Natural Venison Flavor, Chicory Root, Marigold Extract, Rosemary Extract, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Natural Celery Flavor, Iron Amino Acid Complex, Vitamin E Supplement, Manganese Amino Acid Complex, Natural Color (tumeric), Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Copper Amino Acid Complex, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin D3, Niacin, Lecithin, Riboflavin Supplement, Biotin, Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Cobalt Amino Acid Complex, Folic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate, Sodium Selenite.

I admit, I felt that way too.  Actually, I still do.  Amir, for the most part, eats Iams.  We've tried Natural Balance, which he's enjoyed.  However, at least for me, for the moment I'm unable to continue with better quality stuff.  His vet said that if you're going to feed grocery store stuff, stick with Iams.  I told a friend a feel like a rotten pet owner.  She quickly corrected me and said that he always gets fed before I do and that I love my dog, so no, I'm not a bad owner.

Hi Jemma;

(excuse me for a minute)   AAAAGGhhhhh ...... Iam's Huh?
sorry

A bag of Before Grain and/or Orijen is about $14.00-$18.00
and should last between 2.5 and 3 weeks approx. (The boys get only 1/4 cup a day of kibble right now, so not sure how long a big bag would last)
I know the little sample bags have lasted almost 2 maybe 2.5 weeks and they are tiny sample bags.   (ps if you buy at Global Pet Foods they have airmiles Smiley  Lori
