He's our old man and he's a total cat bastard, but he's in what we think is kidney failure. We're waiting for blood work results and that will tell us more--if there's anything to tell.
He's been with us since he was a little kitten--my son bought him with his 5 or 6th birthday money (local exotic pet store took in the kittens when the owner threatened to drown them and sold them for a minimal amount of money) so he's been with us a long time.
He may be a bastard, but he's our bastard and we love him.

Ah no. We're sending healing wishes your way Blanche. Keep us posted. The old bastard won't eat anything but Purina Fancy Feast or whatever that junk is called. Has rejected EVERYTHING healthy and well made and is eating only this crap. Ah well, he's eating, that's the important thing. and the whole kidney failure thing seems to happen to most cats when they get old. Plus, he decided several years ago that grooming himself was for chumps so gave up that chore. Old bugger.

yeah, our vet has said that cats were never meant to live that long, so their bodies just wear out and start to fail. And hey, he's 19, let him eat cheetos if he wants to, is my vote.

That's how it got with Puppy...he was 19 and wouldn't eat much...so i tempted him with ANYTHING (no matter how unhealthy) that the rat would eat. Renal failure is the most common cause of death in old cats. They drink LOTS and LOTS of water and they pee a lot, too. Always a full litter box. Once it gets to the end, there's no smell to the pee either. The old bod kinda gives out. There's nothing you can do for renal failure but according to my vet, it isn't painful- more like a hangover- try to stay hydrated. Good luck, Blanche, good thoughts Angel's way...

Well, he doesn't appear to be drinking much of anything so I've been watering the canned food a bit. You have to be careful with him though as he's incredibly picky about food--always has been. We'll see how it goes. I won't be keeping him going for m y sake, however. Much as we love him, he's a cat of great dignity and I won't have him lingering to make us happy. Old bugger.

The old family cat, Nicky,20-ish (lives with parents) is probably on the same boat.
Drinks lots, eats, sleeps. He's wasting, too. I have shoes that weigh more than Nicky.
But he's pain free, so we just let him dodder on. And of course, he eats the usual crap , too. Store brand cat food and nothing but.

well, the blood work didn't show anything. kidney values are normal and so are his thyroid levels. Some things are marginally off, but would be due to his lack of appetite. Next step would be x-rays and/or ultrasound to look for a tumour. But I'm not going to do that since there's diddly I could do about it and I'm not putting him through it for no purpose.
And sadly, he's stopped eating completely. Not the Purina, not chicken, not turkey, not sardines, not nothing. So we'll see how he does over the weekend and see if I can get him to eat, but I think my old man is telling me he's done.

Aw, I'm sorry Blanche. If the old man has reached the end of the road I'm glad that you'll be able to let him go with dignity. Hugs to you all.

Sorry to hear about Angel. I agree about not doing further tests. It's never easy, making these decisions....no matter how many times you have done it. Thinking about you and Angel.

He's got FIV. The viral scan came back and he's got FIV. Beats me how the hell he got it as I've vaccinated him for it with some regularity. Apparently, he could have been carrying it around with him for years.
So we are letting him go at 1.

So sorry about your Angel cat. He must have been very special to Tucker, his own birthday gift to himself so many years ago. No doubt Angel will go to the Bridge and join the many others who have gone before. A candle will be lit tonight in Belleville for a cat with character.
