Just found out that one of the most widely used products added to drinking water for getting tartar off dogs' teeth contains xylitol! http://www.heartlandvetsupply.com/p-2344-cet-aquadent.aspx

I'm not a fan of it or of LEBA III either. Have you read the ingredients? 25% ETHYL ALCOHOL. Yeesh.
I don't use any of these dental additives. Stick to a good old toothbrush - does the best job and is the safest, IMHO.

I agree, Anna. Most of the "add to water" products have alcohol of some sort. and even some of the gels/sprays use grain alcohol. This one seems pretty decent as it doesn't use a crap load of chemicals--it's called Plaque Off and seems to only consist of seaweed. I've used the Wysong Dentatreat that you can sprinkle on food. It's largely cheese--of course, my guys don't do lactose so not on the menu for them, but I've had a few fosters that did well with it.

No, I haven't. An internet friend in England uses it and really likes it. I brush my guys teeth as much as I can and they get bones. Tank reacts to too many things so I don't usually try any new products, but Plaque Off looks like it might be a possibility.

I brush Lola's teeth with the Virbac toothpaste every night. Her vet confirms that it's really the manual brushing action that does the best job. Lo is not the most willing brushee, but she wants her poulty every night - I can't go to bed without doing her teeth!
I used the Wysong dental powder (essentially cheese enzymes) for a couple of years, and noticed NO difference in her teeth, so it's manual brushing all the way now.

I used to sell the Wysong dental cheese at Global and while it seems a fairly safe product I didn't hear of it making much of a difference.
After Darwin's mammoth dental I had a nice long chat with the very enthusiastic dental surgeon (BOY did she love her job!) and she said that really when it comes down to it nothing can do a better job than manual brushing with an enzymatic toothpaste, and so far, so good for our guys with that routine.

There's a relatively new dental water additive out there that some vet clinics in Guelph are selling. It's called Healthy Mouth. My clinic likes it because it all natural and mostly organic ingredients. The dental surgeon in Guelph Dr. Hale distributes the product. They make one for cats, dogs and horses. Their website actually posts the studies they did on dogs post dental. It did prove to keep the tartar off their teeth longer after a dentistry was performed. I still think brushing and bones are the best way to go! http://www.healthymouth.com/Articles.asp?ID=246

Lol, well we found her outside a Turtle Jack's restaurant in Guelph as a tiny kitten. When we finished dinner and were walking to our car she was rubbing against the leg of a confused football player. She had several wounds so we picked her up and took her home. Since she was a girl we couldn't name her Jack, so we named her Turtle It suits her. We came to find out she had a cuterebra (not sure if that was spelled right) and had been bitten by a larger animal. Oh and she also had lung flukes, so she was lucky a couple of suckers found her! She's the brown tabby, Mac is the mostly white crazy manx.
