Twinkie isn't doing so well lately. We know she has mast cell tumours, as well as a mass in her abdomen.  Panting and shaking are becoming the norm. We have a vet appointment tomorrow but I have no idea what can be done for her, if anything. She could use some positive thoughts though.

Oh man, Tanya.  I'm sorry to hear this.  The panting and shaking are worrisome.  Lots of good thoughts for you both.

Today hasn't been so good with the panting and shaking. Our 'go-to' relief (Pepcid) has done nothing for her. I'm going to cut and past Justin's explanation (to our friend) of what is happening. Any advice on similar experiences would be apprecaited. Thank you.

"It's Justin typing this as I was the one that talked to the vet. The original visit back in September revealed a spot of concern on an x-ray. That spot was potentially the cause of her pain and further diagnosis would be having a ultrasound done. That would be a trip to Guelph and a cost of $500. The money part doesn't matter to me but the diagnosis would only tell us the worst or good news and the only intervention would be surgery if it was the worst. Surgery is not an option in our mind.

Yesterdays visit was mostly a checkup as Twinkie's symptoms had resolved the day of. She said we could get the ultrasound done and it would tell us if that spot of concern was a concern. The other thing as well is that I did some research and suspected her of having mast cell tumours. If there was any biopsy of that and it was determined to be cancerous the only treatment is excision of the lumps. If that was to take place the potential of Twinkie having a anaphylactic reaction is there as mast cells release histamines. They could also just be lumps and bumps and be nothing at all.

I talked about end of life care as we don't want to watch Twinkie suffer. The vet said there are a number of options. She also said that she thought that it may be a little early to think about that. Sadly though Twinkie has had a rough day today so I am not sure where we stand. One of the options of end of life care is (pardon me for speaking so bluntly about this) in home euthenization. I thought that was amazing that one could avoid the drive, the sterility of the clinic and that the dog could spend it's last hours in it's own home."
